Bart will discuss the botanical aspects these fascinating islands of desert vegetation and tropical dryland deciduous scrub. Surprisingly, there are a number of “Californian” plants this far south and east, but there are even more fascinating and garden-worthy plants from this area—Baja’s native persimmon, the golden morning glory, one of the best butterfly plants known, two Salvia species, cacti, caudiciforms, xeric ferns, and many exciting endemics. The 2018 expedition had permits to go ashore and collect on all of the islands and were thus able to explore several rarely visited islands as well as privately owned islands.
