Monday, September 21, 2020
Jason Sampson is the Curator of the Manie van der Schijff Botanical Garden, a division of the Plant and Soil Sciences Department at the University of Pretoria. Based on the capacity of natural systems to improve quality of life, along with effective management and conservation of biodiversity for sustainable development, he drove from inception to completion the Foraging Gardens of the Future Africa Campus. Focused around African Orphan Crops and wild food plants, the Future Africa foraging landscape is an experiment in African urban agriculture and crop conservation, an ongoing collaborative project central to research at the University of Pretoria. Jason will discuss the philosophy, practical aspects of its design, and the future prospects of the concept and collection, as well as notes on some of the crop and forage plants.
